We aim to shape trustworthy, data‑intensive AI and digital systems that unite technological excellence with societal resilience and public value

About us

The Socio‑Technical Systems and Secure Societies research group at the Western Norway Research Institute works at the intersection of people, digital technologies, and institutions to strengthen societal security, resilience, and trust. We study how technologies such as AI, data analytics, IoT, and cloud systems function in real societal and organizational settings and design human‑centered, ethical, and privacy‑aware solutions that support public values. Our research addresses critical challenges in crisis preparedness and management, societal cybersecurity, transport and mobility, energy, agriculture, and digital public services.

Through interdisciplinary research, real‑world pilots, and close collaboration with public authorities, industry, and research partners across Norway and Europe, we bridge cutting‑edge digital research with practical societal needs. Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, our work supports resilient communities, strong institutions, and responsible digital transformation.

Our research group is connected to academia, industry, businesses and public administration in Big Data and AI via several partners.

Vestlandsforsking is an associate member of Big Data Value Association (BDVA/DAIRO). The Big Data Value Association has been established in 2014 as a European Private-Public Partnership organisation that works with the European Commission to identify research and innovation needs in the area of big data. In 2021, BDVA becomes DAIRO. DAIRO stands for Data, AI and Robotics (DAIRO). Our research group is the main contact point for BDVA/DAIRO at the institute.
